THE PRINCIPLE OF TARTAN WEAVING

In Tartan weaving there is a warp (the threads running the length of the cloth) and the weft ( the threads running across the cloth). To achieve the distinctive Tartan pattern the colours and number of threads in the warp and weft must be specified to the weaver. Each Tartan has a 'sett' which describes the weaving pattern i.e. each colour is specified with the number of threads that will appear on the 'warp' and 'weft'.
The House of Tartan unique Tartan Finder software enables these weaving instruction to be given to the weaver. So by using the Clan Connections on our Web Site to discover your Tartan, we can generate the weaving instructions required for your individual Tartan production run.
